Lucas went to the clinic to find out what happened to Alicia. After some pleasantries at the nurse’s station, explaining that he wanted to say goodbye to her before she was taken for her appointment, he was told that she was already gone. “They came early this afternoon,” a coworker explained. “Two orderlies.”
He went to his floor and found her room emptied and cleaned. The smell of hospital disinfectant filled the air. “Lucas.” He heard his name coming from down the hall.
Mark stood in his doorway and gestured for him to come to his room. Once inside, Mark closed the door.
“Did you see what happened?” Lucas asked.
Mark gestured to a chair and sat in the other one. “I was here. Those orderlies that took her needed a lesson in some manners. If I were a younger man I’d have taught them a thing or two.”
“What do you mean?” Lucas sat uneasily in the chair. “What did they do?”
Mark pursed his lips and shook his head. “Are they informed as to the condition of the patient before they transport them?”
“They receive basic information,” Lucas said. “No major details. Only what they need in order to transport the patient safely.”
“So they would have been told she was deaf.”
Lucas nodded. “They should have been. Why?”
“Well, if they were told, they sure didn’t act like it.” Mark said.
“What did they do?” Lucas was growing more agitated by the moment. “Did they hurt her?”
